September 30, 2013

Harlan’s offensive woes continued Friday as the Green Dragons were shut out 44-0 at Shelby Valley.

Shelby Valley sophomore Kasey Tackett had 16 points in the first half as the Wildcats raced out to a 30-0 lead at the break.

Tackett opened the scoring with a 35-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The sophomore added the two-point conversion to put Shelby Valley up 8-0.

Chandler Rowe made it a two score game with an 8-yard scoring run. Tackett added to the lead in the second quarter with a 3-yard run. He added the two-point conversion as the lead grew to 22-0. The Wildcats added another score before the half. Donavon Layne found Jordan Hampton for a 35-yard score as Shelby Valley put the game out of reach. Rowe added the two-point run to make it 30-0.

The Wildcats continued to add to the lead with a pair of scores in the third quarter.

Owen Caudill recorded the first touchdown of the second half. Andrew Newsome’s two-point conversion put Shelby Valley up 38-0. Justin Bowling closed the scoring with a 2-yard run in the third quarter.

Shelby Valley’s run-oriented offense combined for 165 yards on 28 carries.

Harlan was held without a first down on 56 yards of offense. The Dragon offense also lost three fumbles, and Tye Patrick had one interception filling in for the injured Tanner Morris at quarterback.

“The offense had a hard time. I think Tye Patrick played as well as anybody could in that situation. I don’t think we controlled the line of scrimmage. They controlled the line of scrimmage and won the ball game,” said Harlan coach J.B. Donahue.

Harlan (0-5) will attempt to secure its first win of the season Friday at Rye Cove, Va.

“They are a team like us that is low in numbers. It will be a good chance to get something in the win column and try to build off of that,” Donahue said.

Shelby Valley (3-2) will visit Grundy, Va.
