An annual report for Pathfinders for Independent Living’s fiscal year 2013 was presented during an outreach dinner held at the Harlan County Extension Depot on Thursday.
Serving Harlan, Bell, Leslie, Letcher and Perry counties, Sandra Goodwyn, executive director, reported $226,238 was received in federal funds from U.S. Department of Education through the Department of Rehabilitation, part C, in Washington, D.C. during the fiscal year.
“We file all our reports to Washington, D.C. and if we are inspected it would be through this office,” said Goodwyn. “Those receiving Part B money goes through the state.”
Goodwyn also reported $95,136.07 was received in federal funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) stimulus funds.
“We got five years of that amount of money from President (Barrak) Obama’s stimulus package,” said Goodwyn. “This is the third year we have gotten these funds. Services that must be delivered under both those grants are we have to do information and referral. We have to do advocacy where we have to either advocate for something or we teach someone to advocate for something.”
Serving 196 individuals during the fiscal year, Goodwyn said 157 of those were in Harlan County, 34 in Bell County and 1 in Leslie County. She said there were three others served not in their service area.
“Several of these individuals received more than one service,” said Goodwyn. “We also received $1,070 in donations for the fiscal year.
Goodwyn said the goal of Pathfinders is to “help people continue to remain independent after they have developed some kind of disability or that they had a disability all along and their parents were still alive and they helped them so now we’re teaching them how to live independently.”
“One of the things we do is help people wade through the Medicare Part D. We have three staff members who can help with that,” said Goodwyn.
