Students participate in all-state choirs

Special to the Enterprise

November 13, 2013

Six students from the Harlan Independent School participated in the Kentucky American Choral Directors Association’s Middle School All-State Choirs in Bowling Green Nov. 1-2.

The director of the Fifth and Sixth Grade Choir was Tom Shelton. He recently joined the faculty of Westminster Choir College as Assistant Professor of Sacred Music. This position has a focus on Children’s and Youth Music. Shelton works with the Princeton Girl Choir Organization as conductor of Cantores. Shelton was commissioned to compose a piece for the 2013 Fifth and Sixth Grade Kentucky All-State Choir. On Nov. 2, this choir performed the world premiere of “I Stood Upon a Star” and “Rhyme of November Stars.”

Students in the KY-ACDA Fifth and Sixth Grade All-State Choir were Ozzy Howard, Shane Lindsey, Braden Napier and Abbi Witt. The KY-ACDA Jr. High SSA All-State Choir was conducted by Andrea Ramsey. She holds an appointment in choral music education at Ohio State University where she teaches choral methods and conducts the University Chorus. She shares a unique relationship with the dynamic Allegro Choirs of Kansas City, and has twice toured abroad as composer-in-residence with the choirs to Italy, Austria and the Czech Republic.

The SSA Choir performed two songs that Ramsey composed entitled “Sing To Me” and “Letter to a Girl From the World.” The Fifth and Sixth Grade Choir performed “Three Quotes by Mark Twain” that she composed. What a unique experience for these young singers to be able to perform and be conducted by the actual composer of the piece they are singing.

Participating in the KY-ACDA Jr. High SSA All-StateChoir were Kyle Allison and Brooklyn Collins. The concert was held in the Southeastern KY Performing Arts Center (SKyPAC) in Bowling Green.

The Boys Choir director is Marybeth Christman and the Middle School Choir director is Marilyn Schraeder.
