Speaking to the Evarts Tourist and Convention Commission on Monday, Kentucky Recreational Trails Authority Tourism Representative Preston McLain said two new websites have been established which he feels will benefit Harlan County.
“The first one is www.evarts.421yardsale.com with a sub domain of www.421.yardsale.com,” said McLain. “The second one is www.visitharlancounty.com and it’s about everything that is going on in the county — our hills, history and hospitality, which are the three main things that brings tourists to our county.”
McLain said the visitharlancounty.com website lists all the county festivals, parades, zip lines, hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, RV parks and 421 yard sales in the county and is broken down by city and tourist commissions.
“It tells where they can stay, dine and shop,” said McLain. “There are links on there also to the newspapers, so people can check and read what is going on in the county. Is it working? Well, we’ve already had nine ATV riders from Illinois who said they saw this website and decided to visit the area and will return this spring with 31 more ATV riders.”
McLain said he feels sure the 421 yard sale event will be bigger and better this coming year. He said there will be more advertising for the event in places like Corbin, Madison County and Pennington Gap, Va.
“We are looking forward to next year’s event and hope everyone will make plans to participate,” said McLain.
“We need all the representation we can get,” said commission president Janice Napier. “The more people realize what is here…it might not be the most modern conveniences, but we offer a beautiful rustic atmosphere filled with a large array of things to do in the scenic mountains of Harlan County.”
