The city of Evarts is nearing the end of the process for securing a Trail Town designation from the state.

During a meeting Tuesday, Mayor Eddie Manning brought the council up to date on the process.

“We have our Trail Town Run coming up,” said Manning. “We’re doing it the Saturday after Thanksgiving.”

According to Manning, the Trail Town Run is the final step in the process of securing a Trail Town designation.

Manning said representatives from the state’s adventure tourism office will come in to experience the city and the Black Mountain Off-Road Adventure Area before making a final decision.

City clerk Kristi Lamb said the group will leave from the North Evarts RV Park at approximately 10 a.m on Nov. 30.

“When they get back, we’re going to feed them dinner and ask them to fill out a survey, and then after that I think we’re done,” said Lamb.

Lamb said the park had agreed to waive all permit fees for the people going on the ride.

Manning also updated the panel on how things are going with Evarts City Police patrolling KY 2430, better known as Baileys Creek Road.

The city annexed the road in order to secure a Trail Town designation, according to previous reports.

Manning told the council there had already been a few DUI arrests on that section of road.

“We’re already patrolling Baileys Creek,” said Manning. “In fact, I think they’re patrolling there several times a night. We’re trying to show a presence up there to try to curtail people from driving down into town drinking.”

Manning pointed out the city has no plans to tolerate drinking and driving.

“We can’t,” said Manning. “We’ve got an obligation to protect our citizens in this town.”

In other activity, council:

* Discussed collecting outstanding fees due under the city’s privilege license requirements;

* Discussed a water leak, which has been since repaired at Evarts Elementary School, that occurred earlier in the month.
