The Harlan Independent Board of Education created a new bus driver position at a special called meeting on Tuesday.
Superintendent C.D. Morton told members of the board the district is seeing a bus driver shortage due to a driver being off on medical leave.
He said he doesn’t anticipate the driver returning to the position, even though he still holds it.
“We’ve got someone who has applied and is ready to go to work full time,” said Morton. “We need to create a position for that driver. We will eventually eliminate one of the positions when we get back down to our regular three.”
Morton said the new position will be a full-time position.
“It will be a regular morning and afternoon route for the new driver,” said Morton. “It will be for the Woodland Hills and Harlan ARH Hospital area. We need this person while we have someone willing to do this. So, it is my recommendation to create this position at this time.”
Board member Matt Nunez made a motion per the superintendent’s recommendation. Board member Kat Stacey seconded that motion. It was approved by the board.
