Belfry claims title, Williamsburg falls

BOWLING GREEN (AP) — Austin Woolum’s 35-yard field goal lifted Belfry to a 3-0 win over Wayne County and the KHSAA Class 3A championship Friday at Western Kentucky University’s Houchens Industries L.T. Smith Stadium.

Austin Hatfield ran for 114 yards for the Pirates (13-1), who won their first title since 2004 after finishing as the runner-up the last three years. Wayne County (14-1) made its first appearance in the title game.

Woolum scored after a 13-play drive to open the second half.

Justin Johnson piled up 57 rushing yards and Sani Warren added 41 yards as the Pirates amassed 235 total yards on the ground.

Tyler Guffey completed 12 of 30 passes for 169 yards and two interceptions for Wayne County, and Jason Perkins added five catches for 103 yards.

Austin Hall intercepted Guffey on the final drive to seal the victory for Belfry.

BOWLING GREEN (AP) — Jake Guhy threw two touchdown passes to Deion Jackson, and Stuart Mills rushed for two scores as Mayfield defeated Williamsburg 42-0 in the KHSAA Class 1A championship game Friday.

Mayfield (14-1) scored 35 first-quarter points in the Cardinals’ second consecutive state championship and third state title in five years.

Dalton Sizemore led Williamsburg (11-3) with 20 carries for 58 yards.

Guhy and Jackson connected on touchdown passes of 65 yards and 54 yards to go up 21-0 with 8:18 to play in the first quarter.

Guhy finished the game completing 14 of 19 passes for 213 yards and three scores. Bacon Marshall added five catches for 56 yards and a touchdown.

Trajon Bright finished with 129 yards rushing including a 91-yard score before Mills scored his second touchdown of the game with a 15-yard run. Mills finished with 46 yard on eight carries.
