Police in search of 2 in theft at motel, Walmart

Staff Report

December 10, 2013

The Harlan Police Department is searching for two people who recently checked out of a Harlan motel and “literally almost took the motel room with them.”

HPD Chief Mike Thomas said Cpl. Jeff Owens is heading the investigation and said the suspects are also wanted by police in the Middlesboro area for stealing as well.

Thomas said one of the suspects, Crystal L. Craig who is also known as Crystal Barrett formerly of the Pathfork area, just appeared in police reports for theft incidents in Bell County last week. That report appeared in the Enterprise and the Middlesboro Daily News.

Also wanted for his alleged connection with the incident is John Rutherford, 43, who had a Michigan license plate at the time of the Harlan theft. He has been arrested across the state on numerous charges, Thomas said.

According to Thomas, the suspects checked into Mount Aire Motel on Dec. 4. When they left, they took many items including blankets, sheets, garbage cans, mattress pads, pillows, towels, coffee maker and other items, he said.

Thomas said the suspects were caught on security cameras leaving with the items.

Other Harlan merchants are also reviewing video footage to see if the duo has struck their businesses as well, Thomas said.

He said the Middlesboro Police Department is looking for them for thefts that occurred at Walmart.
