Bears drop two in Perry tournament

Harlan County closed the TECO Coal Commodore Classic at Perry Central with a pair of losses to out of state foes.

The Black Bears fell to 61-48 to Greenwich, Conn., on Saturday.

Alex Wolf, a 6-foot-9 senior center, had 12 points, 13 rebounds and at least a dozen blocks as the Cardinals built a big lead at halftime and held off a late Harlan County rally. Senior guards C.J. Byrd and Tom Povinelli had 21 and 12 points, respectively, for the 3-0 Cardinals.

Harlan County missed its first seven shots of the contest, falling behind 15-9 after one quarter. Byrd hit five shots in the second quarter as Greenwich pulled away for a 37-18 lead at the half.

Greenwich extended its lead to 25 midway through the third quarter before a Jones timeout. Led by freshmen Cameron Carmical and Treyce Spurlock, Harlan County closed the period with a 7-4 run.

Led by three baskets from Zach Caldwell and five free throws by Cody Bumgardner, the Bears got as close as 11 as they outscored Greenwich 19-10 in the fourth quarter.

Caldwell scored 12 points and Bumgardner added 11 for the Bears.

Harlan County fell 66-48 to Lakota East, Ohio in the tournament finale on Sunday.

Lakota East’s 6-foot-6 center Alex White took over in the second half to post a 14-point, 12-rebound night.

The Bears stayed close early, playing to a 14-14 tie after one quarter. Junior guard Julias Mays heated up in the second quarter, hitting three of four shots after missing his first five, to help the Cardinals build a 31-24 halftime lead.

White used his size advantage to take control in the third quarter, hitting three straight shots to help Lakota East build a 46-33 lead heading into the fourth period.

The Cardinals hit nine of 14 shots in the final quarter to build their lead to as many as 19 points. Zach Caldwell and Cody Bumgardner, who led the Bears with 16 and 13 points, respectively, combined for five baskets as Harlan County got as close as 12 down the stretch before Lakota East closed the game with a 6-0 run.

Harlan County (6-7) returns to action Friday at Bell County.
