During a recent special called meeting of the Harlan Fiscal Court, Harlan County Treasurer Ryan Creech advised magistrates payment for school resources officers, from the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office working at Harlan County High School, has not been made by the Harlan County School District since 2011.

In response to that issue, Harlan County Schools Superintendent Mike Howard said the sheriff’s School Resource Officers (SROs) are “a big asset to the Harlan County School System and the community.”

“We are currently in the process of negotiating a contract to maintain our SROs,” said Howard. “This is one of the items on the agenda for our next school board meeting.”

Anyone interested in attending the next scheduled meeting of the Harlan County School Board may do so on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the conference room at the central office building located on Ball Park Road in Harlan.
