Harlan High School student Ben Jones recently placed eighth in the state in composition during the recent Governor’s Cup state competition in Louisville. Ben competed against 81 other students across the commonwealth.
In order to compete at this level, students must place in the top five at the district and regional level. Ben placed first in both district and region before advancing to the highest level of competition.
Ben is a member of the Harlan academic team and has competed at the state level for three consecutive years. Ben has made steady progress in the competition during his high school career improving his standing each year.
As a freshmen he placed 20th and then improved nine spots as a sophomore to capture 11th place. Having improved three more spots to secure eighth place as a junior, his future in the competition is very bright.
“Ben is a gifted student not only in composition, but is as well rounded as any student in the school. He works hard and is conscientious about his academic career. He represents Harlan High School at the highest level and we are very proud of what all he has accomplished and look forward to watching him grow,” said Superintendent C.D. Morton.
Ben is the son of Kathy and Robert Jones, of Harlan.
