North tossed shutout as Bell defeats Dragons

April 8, 2014

While the Harlan Green Dragons failed to capitalize on their opportunities, the Bell County Bobcats did not in a 5-0 win Tuesday at Harlan in the district opener for both both teams.

Austin North shut out the Dragons, showing great control with no walks. North gave up five hits but only struck out two as the Bobcats’ defense was flawless behind him.

“We hit the ball, but it was right at them,” Harlan coach Robbie Burns said. “Their pitcher threw strikes and they made the plays.”

Harlan senior right-hander Jacob Hensley gave up five runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings, with four strikeouts and six walks. Tye Patrick recorded the final two outs.

“We pitched well enough to win,” Burns said. “I was proud of the way our team kept battling. We put it in play.”

Ben Abraham had two singles to lead the Green Dragons. Caleb Hogue, Jacob Clark and Jordan Turbyfill added one single each.

Caleb Smith had a pair of doubles to lead the 7-5 Bobcats. Aaron Jenkins, Dylan Cox and Jacob Rose had one single each.

Smith doubled to open the game and scored the first run on a single by Cox.

Zach Turner walked and North was safe on an error in the second inning. Both scored on Smith’s second double.

Turner walked again in the fourth and scored when Jenkins singled.

Rose walked in the seventh inning and scored after stealing two bases.

Harlan (5-5) travels to Bell County on Wednesday.
