Barbourville’s Cinderella run in the postseason ended with a thud Monday in the opening round of the 13th Region Tournament as Corbin collected 16 hits in rolling to a 15-0 five-inning victory.
Corbin blew the game open early, scoring five runs in the first inning and seven in the second.
Eight Corbin starters had hits, led by junior center fielder Nick Vorbeck with a double and three singles in four at bats. Peyton Buford added a triple, double and single. Conner Hicks singled three times. Kevin Goins added two singles. Andrew Jones, Taylor Combs, Austin Combs and Corey Ledington contributed one single each.
“It was a good win. We got solid pitching, played good defense and hit the ball well,” Corbin coach Rob Ledington said. “We didn’t take Barbourville for granted. We had the approach that they are a (district) winner and we are a (district) loser and we couldn’t take them for granted or they would beat us like they beat Knox Central. I tip by hat to my guys for concentrating and doing that.”
Goins pitched two hitless innings to start the game, striking out two and walking none. T.C. Collins gave up one hit with one strikeout and no walks in two innings. Austin Combs pitched the final inning, striking out two and walking two.
Tristan Jackson had the only hit for Barbourville with a two-out single in the third inning.
Tanner Moore suffered the loss on the mound as he gave up 12 runs on 10 hits in 1 1/3 innings. Tate Carter allowed three runs on four hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Barbourville ended the season with a record of 10-11 and won the 51st District Tournament championship with a 1-0 victory over Knox Central.
“I’m very proud of Barbourville. It’s a really good story for them and what they’ve battled through,” Ledington said. “We know they are a very small school, and they won their district. I’m very proud of them and their coaching staff.”
