The Harlan City Police Department has made an arrest in a rash of vandalism that recently occurred in the downtown area.

Police Chief Mike Thomas said officers arrested Mark Mays, of Harlan, on multiple counts of criminal mischief. He said additional charges are pending as the investigation continues.

Thomas said several businesses and signs have been damaged by Mays. According to Thomas, it appears Mays caused the damage with a knife.

“He took a knife and scraped things off signs and buildings,” said Thomas. “A couple of cars got scratched. Some of the memorial plaques around the courthouse were scratched up.”

“He was caught on videotape,” said Thomas, adding additional video is being viewed that will result in additional charges.

Thomas stated his department obtained a warrant Tuesday afternoon allowing officers Brandon Watts and Derrick Noe to make the arrest.

Thomas said a substantial amount of damage had been done. If the costs of the damages are high enough, this could result in a felony charge against Mays.

“We could get a felony warrant and possibly take it in front of the grand jury and get a felony indictment,” said Thomas.
