WILLIAMSON - Law enforcement, friends and first responders have identified Scott Poole, 30, of Williamson, as the man who was found at about 8 a.m. Sunday lying on the bank of the Tug River near the Harvey Street Bridge in downtown Williamson.

Poole was the only son of George and Patricia Poole, members of a prominent family that has been involved for many years in the insurance and real estate business. Scott Poole also is survived by a sister, Christina Smith, of Austin, Texas. Scott Poole was an active member of civic organizations and was following in his father’s footsteps, taking an active role in the family business. He was a graduate of Williamson High School, where he was a star athlete, and of Marshall University, where he majored in banking and finance.

According to statements by emergency responders who didn’t want their names used, the victim appears to have suffered fatal injuries in a fall from the First Avenue floodwall. Williamson Police Department Patrolman B. Gibson responded to the call and is handling the investigation, but is not releasing any details at this time.

The Daily News spoke with a close friend of the deceased who said that the victim had been seen at a local establishment late Saturday and early Sunday, and had left there, apparently to return home. He reportedly did not give his friends any reason to believe he had plans to go anywhere but home. No one had reported him missing since only a few hours had elapsed before his body was discovered.

Mingo County Medical Examiner Mike Casey was called to the scene and pronounced the victim dead. STAT Ambulance Service transported the body to Weaver Mortuary in West Williamson. Weaver’s was waiting Monday for a call from the investigating officer to inform them whether or not the body would be transferred to the state Medical Examiner’s Office in Charleston for an autopsy after speaking with the parents.
