Kentucky State Police Post 10 held their annual “Shop With a Trooper” event at Walmart in Harlan on Wednesday.
“This year Post 10 had 62 kids as part of the ‘Shop With a Trooper’ event, with 22 from Harlan, 20 in Bell and 20 in Knox counties,” said KSP Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs. “Today was our last day. Each kid will receive $120. We are emphasizing each kid gets a nice winter jacket and some winter clothing. Once they get those things then we see that they get some toys.”
Jacobs said this program, in his opinion, is the “best program they have.”
“This is a way for the state police to give back to their community,” said Jacobs. “This really impacts the lives of some of these kids. It gives us one-on-one time with the kids to show them we’re just like them. We’re just normal people just like them.”
Jacobs added this program helps develop a trust between students and the state police.
“These kids see we are there for them,” said Jacobs. “I’ve been participating in this event for the past 11 years, since I came out of the academy. We raise money throughout the entire year for this program.”
After the event, Jacobs said the students will be taken to Pizza Hut for a “pizza party.”
“This is just a great program, not only for the kids but for the state police as well,” said Jacobs.
