Recognizing teachers for their excellence in teaching, Harlan Independent Schools Superintendent C.D.Morton sat aside time during a meeting of the Harlan Independent Board of Education on Thursday to recognize and present plaques to those teachers.

“The board would like to take a few moments to recognize some of our teachers who have been recognized at the state and national level,” said Morton. “We wanted to formally do this at a board meeting to express to these teachers just how grateful we are for the work they do and their commitment to their profession. This is just one way of showing our gratitude for your commitment to the Harlan Independent School District.”

Michelle Crabtree, who has been a teacher at the Harlan Independent School System for the past 10 years, was recognized for her excellence in Polymer Education in 2013 at Harlan High School. She was not only recognized, but she also received a $1,000 check and a stipend for professional development at a national conference.

Marilyn Schraeder, who has been a teacher at Harlan Independent School System for the past 44 years, was recognized by the Kentucky Music Association as the KMEA (Kentucky Music Educators Association) High School Teacher of the Year for 2013.

“This is quite an honor and we’re very appreciative of the work Miss Schraeder does and her longtime commitment to our school district and her students,” said Morton.
