RED JACKET - A two-vehicle accident that occurred on the section of the King Coal Highway located near the Mingo Central High School on Friday resulted in one fatality and another individual injured.

According to information provided by Mingo County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Joe Smith, Deputies J. Endicott and R. Fitch were dispatched by Mingo County 911 at approximately 3:30 p.m. to the scene of the collision. Upon arrival, they observed a Norfolk Southern (NS) utility truck consumed in flames, as well as a Chevrolet Avalanche that had suffered severe damage from the accident.

The report states that Kenneth Doss, age unknown, from Wharncliffe, was operating the Chevrolet pickup truck and allegedly crossed the center line of the highway, directly into the path of the NS vehicle. Upon impact, the railroad truck is said to have burst into flames and had to be pulled away from the Avalanche by another railroad vehicle at the scene.

The name of the railroad employee involved in the crash has yet to be released to media, as well as the extent of his injuries.

Doss had to be extracted from his vehicle by the jaws of life. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the medical examiner. The NS employee was transported to a local hospital by STAT Ambulance Service for treatment of injuries he sustained in the crash.

The Matewan Volunteer Fire Department and the Delbarton Volunteer Fire Department both responded to the wreck. Further details of the accident, including the autopsy and toxicology reports, will be released to the public as soon as the Williamson Daily News receives this information from law enforcement investigators of the MCSD.
