Updates on construction projects highlighted a recent special called meeting of the Harlan Independent Board of Education.

GRW Architect Jimmy Piper presented the updates and revised schematic designs.

On the field house project, Piper said the paperwork needed to be made “clearer.” He said the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) asked that the documents be “revised, making them very clear and precise about what is included in this phase.”

Piper said KDE also needs booster agreements for work exceeding $75,000. He said met with the boosters and feels “they understand what needs to be provided.”

On the softball concessions project, Piper said plumbing plans have been submitted and approved with the local health department. Those plans have now been forwarded for a plumbing permit.

“I did talk to a plumber today and we’ll give him a copy of the plumbing plan,” said Superintendent C.D.Morton. “Once we get that back, what we would do is meet with the local inspector and plumber, lay out what we are going to do and begin that work. They would come back and inspect it. Then we’d complete that work and sign off on this.”

Morton said the concessions building has been ordered. He said it will not be delivered until “they are ready for it.” He said the district has “a lot of the items needed for the interior of the building, which will save them money.”

Updating the high/middle school kitchen and cafeteria addition project, Piper said he had met with KDE and revisions requested by the board were made. He said revised plans included larger dry storage area and a can wash area established. A clothes washer and dryer will be located near the locker area. There will be a wider exterior door to the mechanical area.

“With all the revisions made, are there any further comments about the plans?” asked Piper. “We’re currently drafting up the elementary kitchen and our kitchen consultant has been itemizing some items for that and estimating. He sent an estimate I wasn’t happy with so I sent it back. We needed more details. We’re at the point where we need to submit a formal submittal to KDE for the schematic design to go on to the next step.”

The board approved the submission of the schematic design for the high/middle school kitchen and cafeteria addition project to KDE.
