U.S. Army veteran Jim Shiew may be 70, but he has at least one more big mission: He’s running across the United States to raise funds and awareness for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation out of Tampa, Fla.
“This is a good organization,” Shiew said Friday as he ran through Harlan. “They raise funds for special operations folks, Seals, Special Forces, Rangers — first in-last out guys.”
“A lot of them get injured and killed and this organization takes care of their families, making sure they have scholarships for their children and helping them through their grieving process — just whatever the families need. This is why I am running and what I’m raising funds for.”
Beginning in Buena Vista, Colo., Shiew has already traveled through Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky, putting 2,900 miles behind him.
“I try to run at least 12 miles a day,” said Shiew. “I’m going to finish in Virginia Beach, Va. I’ve got 550 miles yet to go. I’m hoping to finish by the end of September.”
Shiew, who is semi-retired after having owned and operated paint and wallpaper and carpet cleaning businesses, currently owns a CPR/First Aid business in Colorado.
“The VFW Post 1178 in Baxter has been generous enough to allow me to stay the weekend at the post before I head on to Virginia,” said Shiew. “I must say, I’ve met some really nice people here in Harlan County.”
