Approval and a notice to proceed for the Caball Estates Sewer Project in Catrons Creek was announced at a recent meeting of the Harlan Fiscal Court.


Project Engineer Leo Miller, of Leo Miller and Associates in Harlan, said the project was awarded at a cost of $436,858, which he said will be covered by coal severance funds.


“Ash Mountain Inc. was awarded the bid for this project,” said Miller. “This is a 90-day contract. Work should begin in early July.”


In other court action:


*Approved a change order to Total Electric in the amount of $3,500 due to additional electronics added to the Harlan County Attorney’s Office space, which is being renovated;


*Approved an agreement between the Kentucky State Police, cities of Harlan, Pineville and Middlesboro along with Harlan and Bell counties to establish a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force in eastern Kentucky. Also approved was a recommendation that all other cities in Harlan County be added to this agreement;


*Approved an agreement for the fiscal court to enter into and file a renewal application to the Department of Local Government for the Cumberland Hope Community Project in the amount of $250,000;


*Held the first reading of the county’s 2015 budget. A special called meeting will be held on June 30, at 10 a.m. for the second reading and approval;


*Appointed Jody Gluck to replace Bill Lee as a member of the Harlan County Industrial Development Authority Board, which was opposed by Magistrate David Kennedy. Appointed Pete Cornett to replace Jeff Doss on that same board, which was also opposed by Kennedy and Magistrate Jim Roddy. Previously Harry Gibson was appointed to replace James Howard as chairman of that board. Also members of that board include Scott Sherman and Mark Bushnell;


*Approved leasing golf carts for Sleepy Hollow Golf Course instead of purchasing;


*After entering into executive session, per KRS 61.810 (l) (c), the court returned with an approval to hire Paul Daniel Griffin as an employee at the county garage.
