The Wallins Lady Purple Devils utilized a tough pressure defense for most of the first half to take control of the championship game of the Harlan County fifth- and sixth-grade tournament at James A. Cawood Elementary School on Tuesday. When the smoke cleared, Wallins claimed the 2013 crown with an impressive 37-11 win over Black Mountain.

Wallins took command of the game early, going up 12-2 in the first quarter, 19-2 and the half and 31-4 at the end of the third quarter.

Capping off a perfect season with 17 wins, coach Stan Nicely said his team “deserved to win this one.”

Nicely said his squad again depended on their press to put the game away, this time early, forcing turnovers and converting them to baskets.

He noted it wasn’t until about the last couple minutes of the first half that the Lady Tigers managed to overcome the pressurized defense.

“We’ve depended on our defense to turn other teams over all season,” he said.

Nicely said he was proud of his team, adding “We have some big girls with a lot of talent.”

Kaitlyn Amburgy fired in 12 points for the Lady Devils. Whitney Wilson tossed in nine. Hannah Wood scored six. Elina Turner added four. Makayla Walters recorded three. Courtney Polk had two, and Payton Griffin contributed one.

Abby Vitatoe led Black Mountain with five points. Aliyah Cloud scored four and Kassidy Mulkey had two.

Black Mountain coach Glenn Ford complimented Wallins on being a good team. “Hats off to them,” he said.

Ford said his team did not block well early.

“We couldn’t buy a shot, and it just snowballed on us,” said Ford.

In the consolation game, Rosspoint won 19-6 over Cawood. The score was deadlocked at two each at the end of the first quarter and four each at the half. Rosspoint went up 17-4 at the end of the third.

Jacey Lewis paced Rosspoint with seven. Emily Long and Kassydee Owens each had four, while Haley Spurlock and Keely North added a pair each.

Madison Cole and Amber Irvin scored two pints each for the Lady Comets.
