HC seniors lead volleyball squad to region

Coach Donna Vicini continues to have high expectations for her Lady Bears Volleyball team as they head to the regional tournament later this week, especially with the leadership of her three seniors – Lauren Lee, Chyanna Harris and Whitney Stevens.
With their leadership, the team compiled a perfect slate within district play (8-0) this season and an overall record of 19-8. Just last week, the Lady Bears gave a tremendous come from behind effort to defeat Leslie County.
“It has been a pleasure to coach these three seniors,” said Vicini. “Our team is really going to miss them. They are all three very good players.”
The seniors say their most memorable moment is winning the district tournament two years straight and not losing a set in eight straight games this year. The favorite position for Harris and Stevens is spiker, they say. Lee says her favorite post is setter.
All three girls have played on the freshman, junior varsity and varsity squads, seeing a lot of playing time during their career.
“Being a part of the HC volleyball team is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life,” said Harris. “My team was like my second family. I’ve made some of the best friends over the past four years. I’d do anything for the girls. Playing volleyball was one of the best decisions that I made in high school. Lee said her team has one of “the best and closest family relationships. I respect my coaches and am thankful for having them for four years.”
Harris said “It’s very possible” she will pursue a position on a college team.” She is considering attending the University of Kentucky, but has not ruled out a small college if she decides to play volleyball.
Stevens agrees playing volleyball was “one of the best decisions” she made. “It has been a blast. I don’t really want it to end this soon. It has helped me plan for my future.
Steven said she hopes to attend Western Kentucky University and would love an opportunity to play college volleyball.
While Lee is undecided on her college choice, she does plan to attend on athletic and academic scholarships. She also excels on the HC basketball team and has a strong academic background, being recognized last year for her score on the PSAT exam. Harris has compiled a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Lee has a 3.97. Stevens has earned a 3.63.
Stevens is in the First Priority Leadership. Harris also plays softball. Lee is a member of several organizations, including National Honor Society and Beta Club.
With the district championship still fresh from Tuesday night, the seniors will lead the Lady Bears into regional tournament play Saturday at McKee in Jackson County.
