Rosspoint captures county championship

If the Rosspoint Lady Cats needed any additional motivation Tuesday, they needed only to think back two years ago. The Lady Cats went unbeaten in 2011 before falling to James A. Cawood in the county fifth- and sixth-grade championship. This season, Rosspoint completed their mission with a 43-31 victory over the Trojanettes in the seventh- and eighth-grade title game.
“I told them all season long not to get happy. I have not let them live that loss down. It has been motivation for them,” said Rosspoint coach Chris Simpson. “Every day I remind them of how hard you have to work. On a given night, anybody can beat you.”
James A. Cawood (14-3) took an early lead as Noah Canady found Katie Walker for a layup to put the Trojanettes up by two. Rosspoint’s Phebe McHargue then tied the game with a layup. Taylor Johnson gave the Lady Cats the lead with a jumper with 2:30 left in the opening period. McHargue hit another layup and Sara Napier added a pair of free throws as Rosspoint closed the quarter with eight straight points to make it 10-4.
Breann Turner recorded seven of her 13 points in the second quarter as the Lady Cats extended their lead. Rosspoint (19-1 overall, 16-0 county) outscored JACES 11-4 in the period to take a 21-8 advantage at the half.
“We had (Breann) at the basket last year, but we brought her out this year because the game has changed so much. A big girl that can dribble and shoot is so dangerous,” Simpson said.
The teams traded baskets throughout the third quarter. McHargue had five of Rosspoint’s 10 points to maintain the lead at 13 points.
The Trojanettes continued to battle throughout the fourth quarter. However, they were only able to reduce the deficit by one as Rosspoint held on for the win.
“This is a great bunch of girls. They work hard and I am really proud of them,” Simpson said.
McHargue and Turner combined for 28 points in the contest to power Rosspoint in the win.
Canady had 13 points and Kaylea Gross added 10 to pace James A. Cawood.

Cumberland (10-8) rallied from a four-point halftime deficit to edge Cawood 42-40 in the third-place game.
Cawood (10-9) had an opportunity to tie the game late, but Reanna Middleton’s buzzer-beater attempt was no good.
Kacie Russell delivered 17 points and Lainey Cox added 16 to lift the Lady Skins to the win.
Middleton and Katelyn Johnson each recorded 17 points to pace Cawood.
