Sam Moore started his junior season with the Harlan High School golf team with perhaps the best performance of his prep career, qualifying for the All “A” Classic state meet by finishing among the leaders in the regional tournament on Friday at Wasioto Winds, shooting an 81.

“I am very proud of Sam and his great accomplishment,” said Harlan coach Casey Lester. “He stayed poised throughout the day and made some great shots when he needed them most.”

Moore, who has been a member of the HHS varsity squad since he was a seventh-grader, will play in the All “A” Classic state tourney on Sept. 6 at the Eagles Nest course in Somerset.

Barbourville won the boys team competition with Jared Franklin placing first overall with a 75 and Collin Grubb placing third with a 77. Moore was third overall in the region, six strokes behind Franklin. Middlesboro’s Joe Nagle also qualified for the state tournament with an 88.

The Middlesboro Lady Jackets won the girls All “A” regional. Williamsburg’s Bethany Jervis qualified for state competition as an individual with a 75. Barbourville’s Bailey Messer also qualified by placing second with an 81. Hannah Wilford led the Middlesboro golfers with a 94 and was followed by Emily Davis with a 95 and Lauren Durham with a 96. Anna Vogel shot a 141 as Middlesboro finished with a 426 overall.
