PINEVILLE — It’s been a busy June for the Harlan County Black Bears and first-year coach Michael Jones as they reached the 20-game mark Thursday to conclude the Pineville Team Camp.

Harlan County knocked off Whitley County (Black) 59-57 in the first scrimmage Thursday, featuring the balanced attack that has helped the Bears post an 11-9 mark despite a brutal schedule that has included 14th Region powers Knott Central, Perry Central and Hazard and defending 15th Region runner up Shelby Valley.

Senior point guard Cody Bumgardner scored 18 points and sophomore wings Cameron Carmical and Treyce Spurlock added 17 and 15 points, respectively. Tyler Miller, a 6-foot-5 senior forward who returned to the Bears this week after a year at Harlan, scored four points as he works his way back into the lineup. Cody Brewer and Trey Sanders scored three and two points, respectively.

The HCHS starters, who were tiring after playing two games a day for the past two weeks, played less than a quarter in the final scrimmage against Pineville and left with a 19-12 lead. The Lions rallied against the Harlan County reserves for a 60-40 win. Sanders and freshman forward Lamar Burkhart scored seven each to lead the Bears. Bumgardner added six points. Malik Simmons scored five. Carmical tossed in four. Drew Nolan added three. Andrew Creech and Kolby Vanover contributed two each.

Harlan County returns to action Saturday in a team camp at Lincoln Memorial University. The Bears will play Cocke County, Tenn., at 10 a.m. and Oneida, Tenn., at 11:40 in varsity action. The HCHS junior varsity team will play Cocke County at 10:50 and Oneida at 12:30.

Games are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at HCHS beginning at 10 a.m. on Monday and 11 a.m. on Tuesday.

Harlan opened its summer schedule at Pineville and finished 3-5, defeating Whitley County (Red) and falling to Williamsburg 64-42 in action Thursday. The Dragons fell 44-43 to Whitley County (Black) on a last-second shot by Adam Petrey, then defeated Pineville 54-52 on a last-second shot in overtime by Trent McKenzie in action Wednesday. Harlan defeated Lynn Camp and fell to Barbourville in scrimmages Tuesday. The Dragons lost to Knox Central (Blue) and Knox Central (Gold) on Monday. Scoring information is not kept in the summer by the Dragons.
