You can’t teach an old dog new tricks, or so I’ve always heard. I disagree with that.
The late James Still, a beloved Appalachian writer, would ask what new thing a person had learned that day. He always asked people that question. He lived a long, rich life, but he was convinced that everybody ought to learn something new every day.
It might take an old dog longer to learn something new, but it can be done.
Some people will say they are not very smart and yet they are amazingly skilled at things I could never dream of doing, like quilting, or working on cars. There are so many different types of smart in the world and almost everybody has something they do well.
I decided that I would start a blog on the first day of January. A blog is a page on the Internet where a person can talk about anything that is important to them. Some people write on their blog once a month or once a week. I set myself a goal of writing something along with one of my original photographs every single day in the year 2014.
I knew nothing about blogging except what I’ve just said. So, I had to find a free place on the Internet to create a blog, figure out how to make the photos I wanted to go on the blog, how to put them in the blog, how to write the piece for the day, and then how to post it. Some people have beautiful blog sites with gorgeous pictures and fancy layouts. Right now, mine is pretty primitive. I’ve only begun to learn the process.
I also had to think of a title for my blog. The title I chose is QUEEN OF ORDINARY. Anyone who knows me will no doubt agree that I got the ordinary part right.
Ordinary is my gift. I’m good at being ordinary. I don’t consider myself to be more valuable as a human being in God’s eyes than any other person on the planet, nor am I any less valuable than any other person on the planet in His view.
So, I wondered what My Extraordinary God might do with an Ordinary Woman’s life in one year if that life was totally surrendered to him. Of course, I’m still working on the totally surrendered part.
The Bible says that God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. That definitely qualifies me to be someone that God can use. And if anything utterly amazing happens in my life, I will not hesitate to give God all of the glory and credit for His blessings.
I’d say there are plenty of people who would be utterly confounded if God decided to take my life and do something really extraordinary in it.
We’ll see what happens in the 2014.
No matter what the days ahead in this year hold, I know God holds each one of those days in His hands and I am asking Him to “do with me according to your perfect will.”
I volunteer to be the foolish thing that God uses to confound the wise. I volunteer to be the one that He calls out, says stay put, or sends. The most important part of any of that is that HE be the one directing my paths.
