Harlan County Safety Days, Mine Rescue Competition will be held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 22-24 on the Cumberland campus at Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College.


Twenty mine rescue teams from Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Alabama, Pennsylvania, Illinois and New Mexico will put their skills to the test.


Over the last three years, this contest has injected $160,000 into the local economy.


The Harlan County Safety Days Awards Banquet will be held July 24 at Benham School House Inn. The social hour begins at 5 p.m., featuring the band Overdrive for entertainment. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. with awards to follow.
