Police say a verbal altercation led to one man being shot on Wednesday in Knox County.

Chris Dinkins, 50, of Corbin, was shot in the face with a handgun after an alleged argument with Fred Meyer, 86, of Woodbine.

Meyer was taken into custody and charged with first-degree assault.

Kentucky State Police Post 10 in Harlan received a call asking for assistance by the Knox County Sheriff’s’s Department related to a shooting on Prewitt Road in Woodbine. Once troopers arrived at the scene they found Dinkins had been shot once in the face with a handgun.

KSP Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said the preliminary investigation indicated Dinkins was sitting in his vehicle at Meyer’s residence, along with a 16-year-old male passenger. Meyer came out onto the porch and a verbal argument took place. At that time, Meyer fired one shot at Dinkins, striking him in the face, police said.

Jacobs said Dinkins was taken to Baptist Health in Corbin, where he was flown on to the University of Kentucky Medical Center. His condition is not known at this time. No other injuries occurred during the dispute.

Meyer was arrested and lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.

The case is still under investigation by KSP Det. Bryan Johnson.
