Looking for ways to tighten the city’s belt financially, Sewer and Street Department Supervisor Mark Duff reported during a recent council meeting that the city will now only conduct trash pickups on the first and third Thursday of each month.

He said if you have items that need to be picked up and “it’s going to be a truckload,” you can come to city hall and rent a truck.

“We’ll bring it to you and you can load it and we’ll come back and pick it up,” said Duff. “The cost will be $50 per load.”

Mayor Clarence Longworth added the truck may be kept for more than one day, but they “would rather you use the truck for one day only.”

After a financial report was presented by City Clerk Michelle Howard, Longworth said LGEA funds were “down tremendously” and the city had to transfer $8,000 from the general fund to LGEA to cover salaries in June.

Longworth went on to point out insurance payments totalling $37,624.04 were paid from several accounts during June.

“We’re looking at extremely tight times ahead,” said Longworth. “We’re talking maybe shorter hours. I won’t eliminate laying off somebody. We’re just going to have to tighten every string we possibly can, because all these accounts have no funding coming into them — so it’s coming out of the general fund.”

Longworth stressed no purchases will be made unless they are deemed “absolutely necessary.”

In other action, the council:

*Held the second reading of the 2014/2015 Property Tax Ordinance and Resolution to City of Loyall Property Tax Ordinance;

*Named Paul Collins, of Rio Vista, the new street department manager for the city;

*Heard as police Chief Mike Lunsford reported 38 complaints, 25 citations and six arrests were made and addressed during June.

*Heard as fire chief Vern Guffy reported no fires during June. He said he has one truck out of service due to “brake issues;”

*A sewer report presented by Duff advised a manhole on Mapother Street has now been raised and work is continuing on a drain on Courtney Street.
