The Harlan County Sheriff’s Office is coming to the small screen.
“Kentucky Justice,” a reality show set in the sheriff’s office, is set to premiere on Sunday.
Sheriff Marvin J. Lipfird said he is excited about the premier.
“They came in and spent all together 12 weeks with us,” said Lipfird. “They just followed us. There was no script. We’re not actors or anything like that.”
Lipfird said several networks had contacted his office about a reality program.
“I think a lot of it has to do with the TV show ‘Justified,’ said Lipfird. “They thought it was really like that. I told them no, it’s really not. We’ve actually got great people here.”
According to Lipfird, members of the first production crew were not employees of National Geographic but were contracted by the channel. This crew did not gel with the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office, he said.
Lipfird said National Geographic sent another crew to try again.
“I really want to highlight some of the nicer aspects,” said Lipfird. “When they panned and showed the mountains, we’ve got some of the most beautiful country in the world.”
Lipfird said he told the production crew he would not go along with only filming in “bad” areas.
Lipfird said he is aware there will be some criticism of the show.
“There’s a lot of people here that are probably going to criticize us for doing this,” said Lipfird. “But I think if people take an objective look at it, they’ll say that’s pretty much the way it is.”
Lipfird said he and his deputies did not script anything and received no compensation for the show.
“It’s a true depiction of day to day life in the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office,” said Lipfird. “It is what it is.”
Kentucky Justice premiers at 10 p.m. Sunday on the National Geographic channel and can be seen on DirecTV 276, DISH Network 186 and Harlan Community Television channel 67.
The series will run six shows. The titles available on the National Geographic channel website include: Drug Bust Shootout; The Escape Artist; Firestarter and Cocaine Kingpin. The other two titles were not listed.
