The Harlan Tourist and Convention Commission is considering the possibility of creating a driving tour to feature historic churches in the area.
Harlan Tourism Director Brandon Pennington said he has been working on this for several weeks.
“I spoke with Cumberland Tourism to see if they would be interested in helping us put together a historic church driving tour,” said Pennington.
According to Pennington, there is some interest.
“About 14 years ago a gentleman from Benham had actually collected all of them up in the Tri Cities area,” said Pennington. “That just solidified my idea that we should pursue doing a historic church driving tour.”
Pennington said the project is in the planning stages.
“Were getting photos together,” said Pennington. “I wanted to let you all know about it now so as the months come on and we start developing electronic material we can present it to you all and see what you think.”
The commission also considered the possibility of creating an internship program.
“Are you talking high school or college?” asked commission Chair Annie Fox.
Pennington explained the intent is to secure one intern from each of the county’s high schools as well as Southeast Kentucky Technical and Community College for a total of three interns.
“I would like to pursue this idea… basically to capture our youth’s interest,” said Pennington. “They could spend one semester with the commission helping with the website, marketing, advertising, branding and so on.”
Pennington said the bulk of the internship would require the students to plan an event that would cater to other youth.
The internship would be unpaid, according to Pennington.
The commission decided to look further into an internship program.
