Christ Episcopal Church of Harlan will host a “French Quarter Soiree” March 1 at the church featuring guest chef Sarah Zell, of York, Pa. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the church undercroft.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Camp Echo Hope and the Cathedral Domain, a grief ministry for children ages 6-12 who have experienced the death of a loved one within the past two years. The camp is sponsored by Hospice of the Bluegrass and the Episcopal Diocese of Lexington.
“This is the fourth year we have hosted this event,” said event organizer Rie Whitfield. “Each year we raise approximately $7,000 or more for a charity. The first year we did the event for Saint Agnes House, a place where people from Harlan County can go and stay for $10 per night when a family member is receiving long-time hospital care in Lexington. The second year we did Pine Mountain Settlement School and the third year we did Christ’s Hands in Harlan.”
The menu for the event will include crab bisque with sherry drizzle, fried green tomatoes napoleon with roasted garlic and herb, whipped goat cheese and low country beurre-blanc, blackened shrimp in spicy cream sauce with mixed bell peppers, red onions, Tasso ham over three cheese stone-ground grits and marinated kale salad or pan seared quail medallions in mustard bourbon cream sauce with three cheese stone-ground grits and marinated kale salad. Desert will be New Orleans bread pudding with your choice of vanilla or chocolate sauce and crème chantilly.
Chef Sarah Zell, who will be preparing the meal, was trained at the French Culinary Institute in New York City. She has worked under the tutelage of world renown chefs including Chef David Bouley, Chef Craig Koketsu and Chef de Cuisine Andrew Ward.
