FLATLICK — A 17-year-old boy is dead following an early morning wreck in Knox County.
Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said Shawn Smith, of Flatlick, was pronounced deceased at the scene of the wreck by Knox County Coroner Mike Blevins after being trapped inside the vehicle while it was on fire.
Several other individuals in the same vehicle were transported to University of Tennessee and University of Kentucky Medical Centers.
According to a press release, on Saturday at 1:49 a.m., Kentucky State Police Post 10 received a call reporting an injury crash on Turkey Creek Road in the Flatlick Community of Knox County. A 2008 Pontiac G6 operated by Smith was traveling north on Turkey Creek Road when it went off roadway and overturned on its top.
The release states upon Trooper Aaron Frederick’s arrival, the vehicle involved in the collision was fully engulfed and the driver was trapped inside. Four passengers were transported by Knox County EMS to landing zones and flown to the University of Tennessee and University of Kentucky Medical Centers. A fifth passenger was treated at the scene and released.
According to the release, Frederick continues the investigation into the crash. He was assisted at the scene by Trooper Frank Russell, Sgt. Jason Bunch, Blevins, Knox County EMS, East Knox Fire Department and Barbourville Fire Department/Rescue Squad.
