Upcoming events and grants were discussed by members of the Tri-City Task Force recently while meeting at the Tri-City Senior Citizens Center in Cumberland.
Tracy Bailey, a member of the task force and director of the Cumberland Tourist Commission, announced a bicycle ride, “Black Mountain Madness,” is being planned for the Tri-City area sometime in October. No definite date has yet been set. This event will be sponsored by the Cumberland Tourist Commission.
Planned for Aug. 23 in the Tri-City area will be the “Master of the Mountain Walk/Run.” This event will also be sponsored by the Cumberland Tourist Commission (CTC). For more information, you may contact CTC at 606-589-5812.
Members of the task force also discussed hosting a “Zombie Run” the same weekend in October as the Southeast Kentucky Community and Technical College’s annual “Crawdad” event is held.
“A $10,000 grant from the Center for Rural Development has been received for design work for a primitive campground on Church Street in Lynch, just above Portal 31,” said task force member Bobbie Gothard. “Additional funds from this grant will be used for designing a trailhead in the Cumberland area.”
Gothard said scheduled for Sept. 6 will be the “Raven Rock 5K” to be held at Kingdom Come State Park in Cumberland.
“This is a trail run/hike challenge and kids fun race,” said Gothard. “This event is being hosted by Raynemaker Events and we hope to make it an annual affair.”
Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the gazebo located at the lake’s entrance. The kids race will be around the lake and will begin at 9:30 a.m. The run/hike will begin at 10 a.m.
Gothard said awards will be given to the top three in each age division and special awards will be made to overall male and female. The cost will be $25 for the run and $15 for the hike. The kids fun race will be $10. All kids will receive awards and T-shirts.
“If you pre-register before Aug. 24, the run will cost $20, the hike $10 and the kids race will be $7,” said Gothard. “T-shirts are guaranteed to all pre-registered participants.”
