Toddler hit by car dies from injuries

BARBOURVILLE (AP) — State police say a 22-month-old girl has died from her injuries after being hit by a car in southeastern Kentucky.

Kentucky State Police say the driver of a 2013 Ford Mustang told police he didn’t see the girl when he pulled onto a roadway Monday in Barbourville. Police say the man did see two other children with the toddler and waited for them to get out of the road.

Police say the girl fell under the car and was hit by the back wheel.

She was flown to the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. Her name wasn’t released.

The collision is still under investigation, but police say no alcohol or drug use is suspected.

Wife of slain attorney takes on pawn shop case

DANVILLE (AP) — The widow of a prominent defense attorney says she is now representing a man accused of murdering three people at a Danville pawn shop last year.

Media report that Bethany Stanziano appeared in Boyle County Circuit Court Monday on behalf of Kenneth A. Keith, who is accused of fatally shooting 35-year-old Michael Hockensmith; his wife, 38-year-old Angela Hockensmith; and 60-year-old gold broker Daniel Smith of Richmond. The fatal shootings happened in a pawn shop co-owned by the Hockensmiths.

Keith had been represented by prominent defense attorney Mark Stanziano until he was gunned down in June. Bethany Stanziano, who practiced law with her husband in Somerset, asked to postpone Keith’s hearing until October so police can finish testing evidence and she can review it.

Recruits report for training at KSP Academy

FRANKFORT (AP) — Ninety recruits have started 23 weeks of training at the Kentucky State Police Academy in Frankfort.

Capt. David Jude, the academy’s commander, says the rigorous training reflects the demands of being an officer. He says cadets will have to prove themselves daily to earn the right to wear the badge and uniform of a state police trooper.

Recruits went through physical fitness tests on the first day of training. Those tests included weight lifting, sit-ups, push-ups, a 300-meter run and a mile-and-a-half run.

Cadets will have to complete more than 1,000 hours of classroom and field study. Subjects include constitutional law, juvenile and traffic law, use of force, weapons training, first aid, high-speed vehicle pursuit, criminal investigation and hostage negotiations.

The class is tentatively scheduled to graduate on Jan. 16.

Catholic leader in Ohio urges marriage prayer

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati-based leader of Roman Catholics in a 19-county archdiocese is urging them to pray that a federal appeals court considering same-sex marriage bans will uphold what he calls “traditional marriage.”

Archbishop Dennis Schnurr says Ohio’s bishops strongly supported the voter-approved 2004 state ban. He says traditional marriage is “the union of one man and one woman for life.”

In the request circulated this week online, through social media and in emails, Schnurr expresses hope the court will “act wisely.” His archdiocese includes nearly 500,000 Catholics.

A three-judge panel of the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati will hear arguments Wednesday in six cases from Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.

Some opponents of same-sex marriage plan to pray publicly outside the downtown courthouse. Supporters plan nearby rallies.

Battle of Blue Licks re-enactment

MOUNT OLIVET (AP) — A weekend re-enactment this month will commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Blue Licks in northern Kentucky.

The Revolutionary War battle re-enactment is set for Aug. 16-17 at Blue Licks Battlefield State Resort Park. Admission is free.

The park will celebrate the reopening of Pioneer Museum, which will offer free admission for the weekend.

The weekend will feature pioneer camps, entertainment, historical programs and two battle re-enactments at 3 p.m. EDT Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday. The event is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Ky. Woman dies in crash near Fort Peck

BILLINGS, Mont. (AP) — Officials in northeastern Montana have identified a 27-year-old Morehead, Kentucky, woman who died in a weekend rollover crash near Fort Peck.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Glenn Quinnell tells The Billings Gazette that Samantha J. Conn died just after 8:30 a.m. Saturday when she was thrown from a minivan as it rolled.

The patrol says Conn’s sister was northbound on Secondary Highway 24 when she became distracted by deer on the side of the road.

The minivan drifted off the road. The driver overcorrected and the van went across both lanes of traffic and ended up in the ditch, where it rolled.

Conn’s 29-year-old sister, who is from St. Marie, was taken to a Glasgow hospital for treatment of her injuries.

McConnell’s wife defends his record in TV ad

FRANKFORT (AP) — Sen. Mitch McConnell’s wife defended her husband’s record on women’s issues in a new TV ad the campaign released Tuesday.

The ad is a response Democratic challenger Alison Lundergan Grimes’ latest TV ad that criticized McConnell for voting against the Violence Against Women Act. Elaine Chao, McConnell’s wife and the former Secretary of labor under President George W. Bush, called Grimes’ attacks desperate and false.

The ad notes that McConnell sponsored the original Violence Against Women’s Act and said he has always supported its purpose.

The act pays for the investigation and prosecution of violent crimes against women. It has been law since 1994 and has been reauthorized several times. McConnell has voted against the bill, most recently in 2012 and 2013, because he said it contained amendments he did not support.
