Organized to help coal miners, the Coal Miners Underground Motorcycle Club will host their fourth annual Miners Memorial Ride Aug. 24. Rain date will be Aug. 31.
“Everyone will meet at the Harlan County Courthouse with registration beginning at 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.,” said Club President Virgil Saylor. “The ride will begin at 1:30 p.m.”
The cost to participate in the event will be $10 per bike, $15 for couples. T-shirts will be available at a cost of $15 each Saylor said.
“We invite everyone to come out and show their support in these bad times of need for our coal miners,” said Saylor.
“You don’t have to have a bike to come out and show them your support. We want to show these laid off coal miners and their families we are always here to do what we can to help them. If it wasn’t for our miners then we couldn’t go and turn that kitchen light on or get that cold drink out of the refrigerator on these hot summer days. We all need to pull together and show everyone Harlan County people care about their neighbors.”
This year’s ride will leave the courthouse heading up U.S. 421 until it runs into U.S. 119 following it to Cumberland. Riders will turn left at the first red light and follow through town to the Speedway Gas Station as the first stop.
The ride will continue following KY 160 to Black Mountain in Lynch where a second stop will be done to put on helmets, a Virginia requirement.
Riders will follow KY 160 into Appalachia, Va. where they will have a second gas stop. Getting back on KY 160, turning right onto Highway 606, riders will follow onto KY 38, turning left at Trackside Market and ending at the CMMC club house where a free dinner will be available for all those participating in the event, Saylor said.
“We hope to see a great turnout for this event,” said Saylor. “If you don’t want to ride just stop by and look at the bikes and enjoy a few hours on the courthouse lawn talking to your friends and neighbors.”
