Looking to spend a fun day with friends and family? The Pine Mountain Settlement School will host their annual Fair Day on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. on the school’s campus.
Community Coordinator Judy Lewis said registration for exhibits will be from 9 until 11 a.m. in the Laurel House. Representatives from the Harlan County Extension Service will register and judge the exhibits and winners will be announced at noon.
“There will be games for all ages including relay races, cake walk, corn hole tournament, horseshoes and so much more,” Lewis said. “We’ll have a variety of exhibits, information booths, a book sale and old-time music, which is always a crowd-pleaser. Of course, Nolen Lodge will be on hand hosting their annual pig roast which includes all kinds of delicious sides.”
Air-Evac will be on hand to allow residents to see inside a rescue helicopter, Lewis added.
“There will be broom making demonstrations and Fern Cornett will be spinning wool. Jeanette McDaniels will be here with candy, jams, pies and so much more,” Lewis related. “Local author Judith Hensley will also have a booth at the event and we have a large assortment of books for sale this year.”
One of the Fair Day favorites is the cake walk, Lewis said, adding there will be all sorts of cakes and candies given away during this event.
“We invite everyone to bring their local produce and enter the items to win blue ribbons and the famous $1,” said Lewis. “We have a lot of local gardeners and sometimes we get some really unusual items. It’s always fun to see what gets brought in for this event.”
The Pine Mountain Homemakers Club will be selling tickets to win a handmade quilt, which will be given away at 1 p.m. Lewis said tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.
“This is a beautiful quilt and you just might win it,” said Lewis. “The proceeds from this event go to the Homemakers Club, which hosts workshops and events throughout the year.”
