The Harlan County School District will open the 2014-2015 school year for students on Wednesday, Aug. 6. The day will be a full day for students.


Mandatory professional development will be held for teachers on Monday, Aug. 4. The opening day for teachers is Tuesday, Aug. 5.


Here are the starting and ending times for the schools:


Black Mountain - 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.;


Cawood Elementary - 7:40 a.m. to 2:35 p.m.;


Cumberland Elementary - 7:45 a.m. to 2:35p.m.;


Evarts Elementary - 7:50 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.;


Green Hills Elementary - 7:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.;


Harlan County High - 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.;


James A. Cawood Elementary - 7:50 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.;


Rosspoint Elementary - 7:50 a.m. to 2:40 p.m.;


Wallins Elementary - 7:50 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.


Some of the dates to note in this year’s calendar include:


Sept. 1 – No School, Labor Day Holiday;


Nov. 3 and Nov. 4- no School – Flexible professional development for teachers and the General Election;


Nov. 26 – Flexible professional development for teachers;


Nov. 27 and Nov. 28- Thanksgiving Holiday break;


Dec. 22-Jan. 2 – Christmas vacation;


Jan. 5 – Teachers and student return from holiday break;


Jan. 19 – No school, Martin Luther King Day


Feb. 16 – Flexible professional development for teachers;


March 30- April 3 – Spring vacation, which may be utilized as days to make up for inclement weather closings;


May 8 – Tentative last day for students.


Parents are encouraged to monitor their children’s grades and attendance in the Parent Portal online program. For login and password information, contact your child’s school.
