As part of the 49th Kingdom Come Swappin’ Meetin’, the storytelling competition was directed by Carlton Hughes and Odell Wilson with help provided by Pam Holcomb. Featured contestants were from area high schools and from Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College.
Results include: Youth Tandem: first-place, Chase Gladson and Cade Pennington; High School Tandem: first-place, Maria Lewis and Marissa Rutherford; High School Individual: first-place, Sierra Hatfield, second-place, Logan Burris, and honorable mention, Cody Fultz and Shaylan Clark; College Individual: first-place, Lizelle Redelinghuys, second-place, Theresa Banks.
The judges were Rich Haynes and Rhona Creech.
The Kingdom Come Swappin’ Meetin’ Quilting Contest proved to be a success for the festival held each year on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College.
Frances Cox, of Kenvir, took home the Best of Show award for her “Grandmother’s Fan” quilt.
Other winners of various categories included:
Novelty: First-place – Charlotte Graves, of Paris, for “Harlan Dragons.” Second-place – Joan Mullins, of Jenkins, for “Ivory Blooms.”
Pieced: First-place – Berry Blakley, of Harlan, for “Barn Raising.” Second-place – Joan Mullins, of Jenkins, for “Country Sampler.” Third-place – Kathy Cook, of Evarts, for “Bargello.”
Beginner: First-place – Bobbie Thomas, of Cawood, for “Denim Delight.” Second-place – Bobbie Thomas, Cawood, for “Striped Tack.”
Harlan County High School students recently won awards during the Tri-City News Photography Contest held during the Swappin’ Meetin.’
Winning awards were: Candice Huff, scenery category, second-place; Sarah Dixon, Harlan County category, third-place; Sarah Dodson, black and white category, third-place; Jessica Hall, people category, first-place; Alli Howard, flowers category, first-place; and Cole Caudill, flowers category, third-place.
The students are enrolled in the dual credit photography class taught by SKCTC instructor Carlton Hughes and HCHS career and technical education teacher David Hensley.
