Fred Chasteen, 62, of Harlan, passed from this life on Thursday, September 19, 2013 at UK Medical Center in Lexington. He was born October 21, 1950 in Harlan and was a lifelong resident here. Fred was a retired coal miner and had worked in several area mines throughout the years.
He was blessed with a kind, gentle spirit that brought joy to those around him, especially children. Fred was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy and served his country during Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Chasteen; and a brother, Walter Chasteen.
Survivors include his mother, Mallie Begley Chasteen, Harlan; one sister, Joyce Gambrall, Cincinnati; four brothers, Oscar Chasteen, Dayhoit; John Chasteen, Jr., Minneapolis; Roy Chasteen, Rosspoint; and Jesse Chasteen, Harlan; two step-children, Brandon Saylor and Teresa Worthington; and a grandson, Alex Worthington, all of Tennessee; as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Monday, September 23, from noon until 2 pm at Harlan Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will follow at the Wilder Cemetery at Rosspoint with family serving as pallbearers.
Military Rites will be presented by the Harlan Honor Guard at the cemetery.
