Irene Smith, 80 of Monroe died at 7:50 a.m. Tuesday in her home. She had been in poor health for four years.


Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday and 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Rupp Funeral Home where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Rev. Rick Massingill, pastor of the North Monroe Street Church of God, Mountain Assembly will officiate. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.


Born September 24, 1933 in Cawood, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Daniel and Jane (Surgener) Burkhart. She married Bob Smith on December 31, 1949 in Harlan, Kentucky. He preceded her in death on May 31, 2009.


Irene was a member of the Cawood Church of God, and attended the North Monroe Street Church of God, Mountain Assembly.


Surviving are her children Robert F. (Nalda) Smith, Vickie L. Hawks, Brenda L. (Charlie) Hopper, and son-in-law Bobby R. Howard all of Monroe; brother, Edward Burkhart of Newark, Ohio; sisters, Juanita Hensley of Cawood, Kentucky and Louella Bray of Monroe; eight grandchildren Kathy, Roger, Missy, Summer, Shauna, Angie, Brian and Amy; and thirteen great-grandchildren.


She was preceded in death by her husband, daughter Janie D. Howard and brother, Roy Burkhart.
