Both Harlan County and Harlan were well represented on the recently announced All-Area 9 cross country teams.
Harlan County earned the top individual honors awarded in the girls high school division. Senior Kaitlyn Stittums was named the Area 9 Runner of the Years, while coach Ryan Vitatoe was selected as the girls coach of the year.
The duo was joined on the all-area team by fellow Lady Bears Allison Cornett, Katie Graham, Samantha Howard, Breanna Epperson and Amy Clark.
Harlan County placed three runners on the high school boys team. Caleb Bailey, Corey Hornsby and Steven Engle each received all-area honors. Harlan High School’s Mason Miller was also named to the All-Area 9 team. Letcher Central’s Chase Yates was named the area’s runner of the year, while Faye Collier received coach of the year honors.
Vitatoe was also named the girls middle school coach of the year, while Harlan County’s Grayson Raleigh was named the Area 9 Runner of the Year. Harlan County’s Whitman Hopkins was named to the all area middle school boys team, while Megan Witt was named to the girls squad. Pikeville’s Adam Swofford and Sherry Lane received runner of the year and coach of the year honors respectively.
Harlan County’s Matthew Brown was named the Area 9 Elementary Boys Runner of the Year, while Harlan’s Leo Miller received coach of the year honors. Harlan’s Story Miller, Carson Murray, Ozzy Howard and Harlan County’s Lucas Epperson were also selected to the elementary boys team.
Vitatoe was named the elementary girls co-coach of the year. Letcher’s Bailey Kincer was honored as the elementary girls runner of the year, while coach Diana Collier was also named co-coach of the year.
