Harlan County was unable to hold off a late Shelby Valley comeback and fell to the host Lady Cats 43-41 in the championship of the Appalachian Wireless Christmas Connection on Saturday.

The Lady Bears limited Shelby Valley to just 22 points through three quarter, but the Lady Cats put together a 21-point outburst in the final period to rally for the win. Junior guard Taylor Rowe recorded seven of her game-high 18 points in the final period to power the comeback effort. Eighth-grader Lindsay Proffitt turned in all of her nine points in the final eight minutes.

The Lady Cats took a 14-12 lead after one quarter. Harlan County limited Shelby Valley to just three points in the second quarter to take a 23-17 advantage into the half. The Lady Bears put together another solid defensive effort in the third quarter. Harlan County held the Lady Cats to five points to extend the lead to 31-22.

Senior guard Kaitlyn Stittums contributed 12 points to lead Harlan County. Senior center Shannon Shackleford added 11 points for the Lady Bears.

Harlan County (11-2) returns to action Friday with at Bell County in a 52nd District contest. Shelby Valley (7-4) will take on Allen Central in the 15th Region All ‘A’ Classic at the East Kentucky Expo Center on Jan. 3.
