Down 3-0 early, Harlan County rallied and won in walk-off fashion Friday, edging visiting Corbin 4-3 in a matchup of 13th Region contenders.

One-out singles in the seventh inning by Zach Doss and Scotty Bailey started the rally. Both runners moved up a base on the throw from right field on Bailey’s hit. Nick Jarvis was walked intentionally by Corbin ace Kevin Goins, a senior righthander, to load the bases and set up a potential game-ending double play. The strategy was spoiled when a passed ball allowed Doss to come home with the tying run. WIth first base open again, Anthony Jenkins also drew an intentional walk. Gage Burkhart drove home the winning run when Bailey beat the throw home on a grounder to third.

Tyler Cornett, a senior righthander, earned the win on the mound as he struck out the side in the seventh inning, working out of a jam after giving up a hit and a walk. Freshman lefthander Jared Sizemore was dominant in 3 2/3 innings on the mound, striking out seven and giving up only one hit. Jenkins started on the mound, allowing three runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings while striking out three and walking four.

Blake Rutherford, Bailey and Chance Brown each had two hits for the 2-3 Bears, including a double by Brown, the only extra-base hit for HCHS. Doss, Jenkins and Cole Wilson each added one hit.

Corey Ledington led Corbin with two hits. Taylor Combs, Nick Vorbeck and Peyton Buford each added one hit.

Combs started on the mound and allowed two runs on six hits in five innings. Goins allowed two runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings.

Two walks to start the game turned into runs for the Redhounds as Buford followed a two-out error with a two-run single.

Vorbeck doubled to lead off the third inning, took third on Vorbeck’s single and scored on an error in center field.

Harlan County scored a run in the bottom of the third as Cole WIlson singled, stole second and came home on a single to left by Bailey.

The Bears added another run in the fourth as Brown singled and scored on a hit by Rutherford.

Harlan County returns to action Friday at home against South Laurel and will play North Laurel at home on Saturday at noon.
