Chance Brown and Scotty Bailey each hit home runs as Harlan County avenged a 10-2 loss from less than two weeks ago with a 9-6 eight-inning win Tuesday at Clay County.
Harlan County collected 11 hits in the win, led by two each from Brown, Bailey, Blake Rutherford and Anthony Jenkins. Tyler Cornett, Gage Burkhart and Sawyer Fields added one hit each.
Burkhart allowed only one hit 2 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win. The sophomore lefthander struck out four and walked two. Bailey started on the mound, giving up six runs (two earned) on three hits in 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and five walks.
Jenkins and Brown opened the eighth inning with singles, and both Brown and pinch runner Hunter Nease moved up on Fields’ sacrifice. Brendan Rutherford was safe on an error to bring in the go-ahead run. Another error on a ground ball hit by Connor Leisge brought home two insurance runs.
Harlan County also scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a brief 6-5 lead. Blake Rutherford and Jenkins opened the inning with hits and both came home on Brown’s blast over the fence in left.
HCHS scored one run in the third inning on Bailey’s leadoff homer.
The Bears took an early 2-0 lead as Bailey doubled and Doss walked with one out. Leisge’s ground out brought in one run and Cornett singled home another.
Harlan County (19-14) closes its home schedule Wednesday against Central (Wise) Va.
