While all the other leaders were having a rough day after a strong 18 holes Saturday, Matt Gann remained steady in the second round Sunday on the way to his third Harlan Invitational title.

Gann, who was a stroke behind Drew Chamberlain after the first 18 holes, pulled away Sunday for a four-stroke victory. Gann, a Pineville resident who coaches golf at Bell County High School, shot a three-under par 65 on Sunday after shooting a 63 on Saturday. Chamberlain, a Cumberland resident who coaches golf at Harlan County High School, cooled off from his 62 on Saturday with a two-over par 70 on Sunday to finish with a 132.

“I thought I played pretty well today,” Gann said. “I finally started hitting some puts and got some momentum.”

Ben Langley had the best second round in the championship flight with a 62 to move from ninth to third with a three-under par 133. Jason Estep was fourth with a 135. Madison Johnson and Cameron Bailey tied for fifth with a 137.

The Harlan Invitational title was the third for Gann, who also won in 2007 and 2012. Gann is off to a strong start this spring with tournament titles in Jonesville, Va., and Pineville, along with winning a qualifier at Somerset for the state amateur tournament.

“I thought I played well,” Gann said. “It’s always fun coming up here, and I’ve been coming up here for a lot of years. It’s a really good field, a really good tournament and the golf course is in good shape.”
