Lady Bears win opening meet

The Harlan County Lady Bears won their first meet of the season on Tuesday at the HCHS course, taking three of the top five spots and finishing with 20 points.


Allison Cornett led Harlan County, finishing second with a time of 24:31.38. Samantha Howard was third, finishing at 25:06.50.


Other top runners from HCHS included Katie Graham (fifth), Breanna Epperson (eighth), Amy Clark (ninth), Rebecca Middleton (15th), Brianna Roque (16th), Lainey Cox (19th), Emma Day (20th), Jordan Daniels (22nd), Noah Canady (25th), Whitney Barger (26th) and Summer Garrett (31st).


Letcher Central was second in the team competition with 37 points. Pineville placed third with 79 points.


Perry County Central’s Dakota Shepherd was the individual champion at 24:04.06.


“I’m very proud of our kids. We had great effort from elementary through girls high school. There are so many bright spots that I can’t help but be very excited about this season,” said Harlan County coach Ryan Vitatoe.


The boys race was canceled when storms hit the area just before it was scheduled to start.


“I’m very disappointed the boys weren’t able to run,” Vitatoe said. “They’ve worked very hard this summer, but, unfortunately, we have to wait one more week to see their debut.”


Harlan County’s Lexi Owens won the girls middle school race with a time of 16:57.81. Harlan County’s Madison Blanton was second with a time of 18:24.62, Pineville’s Elayne Fortner finished third with a time of 19:58.50. Pineville’s Jenna Long and Gabby Patterson rounded out the top five.


Harlan County’s Sean Cooper won the boys race with a time of 13:47.


Letcher Central’s Will Adams and Pineville’s Rowan Chandler finished second and third, respectively. Bell County’s Brennan Murphy and Pineville’s Jason Jones claimed the next two spots. Bell County’s Jacob Smith, Pineville’s Isaac Saylor and Bell County’s Cade Nolan and Noah Stewart rounded out the field.


Harlan’s Story Miller was the winner in the elementary school division of the race, finishing with a time of 9:20.66


Harlan County took the next three spots as Zachary Carmical was second at 9:25.19, Ulysses Roque was third at 9:29.06 and Shane Kelly was fourth at 10:59.09. Lucas Epperson placed ninth at 13:30.40.
