Jared Sizemore picked up where he left off in a breakout high school season last spring with a dominating performance Monday in the opening round of the District 4 Senior League Tournament at Lynn Camp High School.

Sizemore allowed only one hit over 5 2/3 innings, striking out 16 and walking two as Harlan County defeated South London 6-2.

Brendan Rutherford struck out three and walked none in 1 1/3 innings to earn the save.

“When I saw the draw for the bracket, I knew with the pitching we have we have a great shot to win,” Harlan County coach Bob Rutherford said. “I’m very confident in our pitching, and both Jared and Brendan threw the ball well. We’ll have Gage (Burkhart) back when we play again next week.”

Sean Johnson had two singles to lead the Harlan County offense. Dylan Cornett, Caleb Carmical and Andrew Saylor added one single each.

Saylor singled with one out in the first inning, moved to second on a passed ball and scored after a couple of errors.

Johnson led off the second inning with a single, moved to second on Carmical’s ground out, took third on a wild pitch and scored on an error on a ball hit by Drew Brewer.

Johnson started the Harlan County offense again in the fourth with a single. Carmical walked and both runners moved up on a passed ball. After Benjamin Lewis walked to load the bases, Johnson scored on a passed ball. Carmical scored on a sacrifice fly by Saylor.

Sizemore walked and Cornett singled to start the Harlan County offense in the seventh. Rutherford’s ground out brought in Sizemore. Carmical singled home Cornett for the final run.

Tyler Muncy pitched 1 1/3 innings for South London. Seth Swafford pitched five innings. Kyle Gilbert recorded the final two outs.

North Laurel defeated Corbin in last night’s other game. North will play Wayne County tonight in the second semifinal with the winner playing Harlan County on Monday in the winners bracket finals.
