Short on pitching after a hard-fought loss to North Laurel on Wednesday, the Harlan County All-Stars needed a big game from Andrew Saylor on Thursday against South London.
Saylor delivered with a complete game, scattering six hits as Harlan County advanced to a rematch against North Laurel with a 7-1 win over South London.
“We needed him to throw strikes and let his defense work. He did exactly what we asked,” Harlan County coach Bob Rutherford said.
Gage Burkhart and Caleb Carmical each had triples to lead the Harlan County offense. Sean Johnson and Brendan Rutherford added doubles. Saylor contributed a single.
Harlan County took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to leadoff hitter Noah Busroe and his speed. Busroe walked, then stole second and third before scoring on Saylor’s ground out.
Jared Sizemore walked and Rutherford doubled with the score tied 1-1 in the fourth inning. Johnson doubled home two runs with a shot to left field and Carmical tripled home another with a hit to right field.
Dylan Cornett was safe on an error in the seventh inning, then stole two bases before scoring on Saylor’s single. Carmical, serving as a pinch runner, scored on a wild pitch. Sizemore walked and scored the final run on Rutherford’s ground out.
Harlan County will play North Laurel on Friday at 7. Harlan County can force a championship game on Saturday by winning. North Laurel will capture the District 4 Tournament title by winning Friday or Saturday.
